LARGO, Md. – Sparked by 17 points off the bench by Gus Stone (Baltimore, Md./North County), Prince George's Community College downs Pennsylvania Highlands Community College 63-51 in National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XX men's basketball action on Wednesday.
Stone fueled the squad with 17 points off the bench after going 7-for-14 from the floor, 2 of 6 from behind the arc and 1 of 3 from the free throw line. The sophomore reached double figures for the fifth time this season.
Mykal Johnson (Landover, Md./Charles H. Flowers) tallied 11 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals for the Owls (3-2) while James Hagins (Roanoke, Va./William Fleming) hauled in 12 rebounds in the winning effort.
The Black Bears scored 21 of the first 35 points in the first 10 minutes of the game before Prince George's closed the half on a 21-6 run to take a 35-27 lead going into the locker room. Six different players scored for the Largo program in the second portion of the first half, but Stone led the way with seven points including six straight to give the Owls the lead for good with 8:07 left on a traditionally 3-point play.
Pennsylvania Highlands started the first 10 minutes of the second half similar to the first half by outscoring Prince George's 16-11 to trim the margin to 46-43 with 10:27 on the clock. Powered by a 12-1 run by the Owls, the Largo team pushed the lead to double digits with its largest lead at 58-44 with 4:59 on the clock en route to a 63-51 victory. Tavon Ngangum (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) fueled the surge with five points.
Shiloh Beale (Waldorf, Md./St. Charles) posted nine points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals while Byron Scriber (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) registered eight points and four rebounds. The duo was in the starting lineup for the first time in their career.
Prince George's returns to action on Nov. 15 when the squad opens Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference play against Allegany College of Maryland. Game time is 5 p.m.
