HAGERSTOWN, Md. – Kennith Ford (Forestville, Md./National Collegiate Prep) scored 22 points to power Prince George's Community College past Hagerstown Community College 70-65 in Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (MD JUCO) men's basketball action on Wednesday.
Ford shot 8-for-14 from the floor, 4 of 10 from behind the arc and 2 of 2 from the free throw line to finish with 22 points. It was Ford's fourth 20-point performance this season and third in his last six tilts. The sophomore has reached double figures in 18 of his last 19 games.
Mykal Johnson (Seat Pleasant, Md./Charles H. Flowers) added 13 points for the Owls (14-10, 5-7 MD JUCO) and Shiloh Beale (Waldorf, Md./St. Charles) chipped in 10 points in the winning effort. Johnson has posted double figures in 23 of 24 games this season and 49 of 54 career games while Beale has posted double figures in each of his last three contests.
Trailing 8-7 in the first half, Prince George's used an 18-5 spurt to take a 25-12 advantage. Ford powered the run with nine points. The Hawks came back to trim the margin to 30-29, but Ford scored a layup with 16 seconds left in the first half to give the Owls a 32-29 lead at the break.
The second half became a seesaw battle with neither team being able to grab more than a two-point lead. With the score tied at 58, Beale and Johnson combined for five unanswered points to give Prince George's a 63-58 advantage with 3:31 remaining. The duo extended the margin to 69-62 with 28 seconds left with a a pair of free throw apiece to help push the margin to seven points en route to the 70-65 victory.
With the win, the Owls halts a five-game losing streak and remain in the hunt for one of the eight spots in the MD JUCO Tournament hosted at Novak Field House.
Prince George's returns to action on Friday at home against CCBC Dundalk. Game time is 7 p.m.
