Largo, MD. – Owls sophomores Coneisha Smith and Joel Thomas were named amongst the NCAA and NJCAA athletes who earned National Athlete of the Week honors on Tuesday, as presented by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). National Athlete of the Week is an award selected and presented by the USTFCCCA Communications Staff at the beginning of each week to 10 collegiate outdoor track & field athletes (male and female for each of the three NCAA divisions and both NJCAA divisions).
Thomas earned the honors after being recognized as the first male to break the 11 second mark in the 100 meters this season. He broke this mark this past weekend in outstanding fashion, clocking 10.68 at the Don Webster Invitational, hosted by Coppin State. He also took first place in the 200 meters and he's currently ranked fourth overall at the NJCAA DIII level.
Smith also made her mark over the weekend while participating in the long and triple jump. She catapulted to the top of the national chart with several key jumps, one of which saw her soared up to 10.10m (33-1 ¾) at the Don Webster Invitational. Currently she is one of two women who have jumped further than 10 meters in NJCAA DIII.
