LARGO, Md. – The Prince George's Community College men's basketball team continues its quest to the NJCAA Division III National Championship in the NJCAA District VII Division III Men's Basketball Championship starting on Friday. The Owls will take on the NJCAA Region XVII representative West Georgia Technical College on Friday at 4 p.m. on the campus of Sandhill Community College in Pinehurst, N.C.
In the other semifinal, Anne Arundel Community College, who Prince George's defeated 73-68 on Sunday in the NJCAA Region XX Division III Championship, will take on host and NJCAA Region X representative Sandhills on Friday at 6 p.m. The two semifinal winners will meet in the championship game on Saturday with the winner advancing to the NJCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship on March 14-16 at the UCR Regional Sports Center in Rochester, Minn.
This will be the first matchup against West Georgia Technical since an 87-81 loss in the 2013-14 NJCAA Division III District VI semifinals. The Owls have played Sandhills three times since the 2014-15 season. The last meeting, Sandhills defeated Prince George's 75-69 in OT on Nov. 11, 2016 while the last tilt in the postseason was a Sandhills 99-92 overtime victory in 2014-15 in the district semifinals. The Largo team has beat Anne Arundel twice this year at Novak Field House.
Prince George's is led by sophomore and NJCAA Region XX Division III Tournament Most Valuable Player Alex Morales (Paterson, N.J./Manchester Regional), who fuels the team with 19.8 points, 11.8 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 3.9 steals per game. Freshman Tunde Schriver (Washington, D.C./H.D. Woodson) ranks second on the team with 17.7 points per game while sophomore Dexter Turner (Washington, D.C./Idea Public Charter) leads the team with 7.1 assists per game and ranks third with 9.5 points per game.
Prince George's will be participating in the district tournament for the sixth time in the last eight years and for the second-straight campaign. The Owls went to the district tournament as the NJCAA Division III Region XX champion in 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2017-18 and lost in the semifinals. In 2011-12, the squad won the NJCAA Division III Region XX Tournament title before defeating West Georgia Technical College 83-81 in the NJCAA Division III District VII semifinals and then lost to Sandhills Community College in the championship game, 82-67. The last time Prince George's advanced to the NJCAA National Tournament was 2007-08 when the Owls were still a member of the NJCAA Division II.
Last season, the our defeated Southern Crescent Technical College in the NJCAA Division III District VII semifinals 68-54 before falling to Montgomery College 85-71 in the championship game. Sophomore Darren Rivers (District Heights, Md./DuVal) is the only player on this year's team that has district tournament experience.
Interim head coach William West has guided the Owls to a 21-5 overall mark and swept through Region XX Division III action. West led the team to its third 20-win season since 2013-14 and the first since the squad went 21-9 in 2016-17. West was an assistant coach last season when Prince George's advanced to the NJCAA District VII Championship Game.
