Largo, MD — May 30, 2025
Prince George's Community College is excited to announce the hiring of John Childers as its new Head Baseball Coach. A proud PGCC alumnus and accomplished coaching veteran, Childers brings over 30 years of coaching experience at the high school, collegiate, and American Legion levels, along with a deep passion for developing student-athletes.
Childers joins PGCC following a highly successful tenure at La Plata High School, where he compiled a remarkable 226-65 record. During his time there, he led the program to:
- Three Maryland 2A State Championships (2016, 2019, 2021)
- Eight Regional Titles
- Five Conference Championships
- Two State Runner-Up Finishes
His outstanding leadership and coaching earned him multiple accolades, including:
- NFHS Maryland State Coach of the Year (2020)
- District 4 Coach of the Year – Maryland State Association of Baseball Coaches (2013, 2014, 2016, 2019, 2021)
- Charles County Coach of the Year – Maryland Independent (six-time recipient)
"Coach Childers has a proven track record of excellence, a strong commitment to player development, and a clear passion for the game," said Jo Ann Rogers Todaro, PGCC Athletics Director. "As an alumnus, he understands the College's mission and will be a tremendous asset to our athletics program."
Beyond high school coaching, Childers brings experience from the collegiate ranks, having served as an assistant coach at Bowie State University, where the team won the CIAA Conference Championship and ranked top 20 in Division II for runs scored and doubles. He also coached at St. Mary's College of Maryland as a pitching coach.
In addition to his coaching, Childers has been deeply involved in community outreach. Since 2018, he has run a youth summer baseball camp for players ages 8–14, reinforcing his dedication to nurturing talent and love for the game from a young age.
Childers' playing career began right here at PGCC, where he played third base under MSABC Hall of Fame Coach Bumps Vaughn, before transferring to St. Mary's College of Maryland, where he excelled as a versatile player and earned MVP and team captain honors.
Coach Childers will assume his new role immediately as he begins recruitment and preparations for the upcoming season.
