Prince George's Baseball Plays Six Games In Four Days Starting On Saturday

opening pitch… Prince George's will play six games over the next four days and will battle four different teams in that stretch. The Owls start the span with a pair of key Division III battles against Finger Lakes Community College on Saturday and against CC of Allegheny County-South on Sunday. Prince George's returns to league play on Monday against Harford before traveling to Anne Arundel on Tuesday to conclude the four-game span.

the series… Finger Lakes swept a doubleheader last year in Largo. The Lakers edged the Owls 11-10 in the opening game and 6-5 in the nightcap. Prince George's last win in the series was in 2014.

the word on the lakers… Finger Lakes, who travel Montgomery on Friday, come into the weekend 3-5-1 after defeating Hudson Valley 10-1 on Thursday. Cody Cooper leads the team with a .464 batting average with 13 hits, two runs scored, five doubles, a triple and 10 RBIs. Trevor Bradshaw is second on the team with a .429 batting average, nine hits, nine runs scored and three RBIs while Mike Magnanti is hitting .393 with 11 hits, five runs scored, a double and 10 RBIs. Hurler Cole DuBois leads the pitching staff with eight innings pitched, an 0-1 record, three strikeouts and a 4.50 ERA. The twinbill will conclude a stretch for the Lakers of 13 games in eight days.

the series… The two-game set between CC of Allegheny County-South and Prince George's will be the first matchup since the 2015 season when the Owls swept the Lakers 10-0 and 2-1.

the word on the tigers… CC of Allegheny County-South, who is scheduled to play at Allegany College of Maryland on Friday, comes into the weekend 2-4 after sweeping Jamestown Community College on Thursday. Omar Pineda Cabrera leads the team with a .444 batting average with eight hits, four runs scored, a double and an RBI. Rafael Ramos is hitting .333 with five hits, a run scored and two RBIs while Noah LaGuardia-Elder is third on the squad with a .313 batting average, five hits, a run scored, a double and an RBI. Ryan Frizzel fuels the pitching staff with 9.2 innings of work, an 0-1 record and five strikeouts.

the series… Harford comes into the game riding a four-game winning streak in the series against Prince George's while the last win for the Owls was a 6-5 decision on Feb. 21, 2014. Monday's game is a rescheduled contest from a Mar. 14 contest and now the two teams will play twice in a nine-day span with Prince George's traveling to Harford on Apr. 4.  

the word on the owls… Harford, who battles Frederick on Saturday and Erie on Sunday, comes into the weekend 15-4 overall and 7-0 in league play after defeating Anne Arundel 11-1 on Thursday. Peyton Sorrels leads the team with a .488 batting average, 21 hits, 14 runs scored, two doubles, two triples, two homers and 21 RBIs. Tanner Forry is second on the team with a .484 batting average, 15 hits, 12 runs scored, five doubles, a triple, three homers and 12 RBIs while Toby Sponseller is hitting .466 with 24 hits, 24 runs scored, four doubles, a triple, three round trippers and 19 RBIs. Tim Kranz powers the pitching staff with 22.0 innings pitched, a 4-0 record and 17 strikeouts.

the series… Prince George's has won the last three games in the series after sweeping the season series last year against Anne Arundel 15-2 and 7-3. Prior to this three-game winning streak the Riverhawks won five consecutive in the series dating back to the 2014 season.

the word on the riverhawks… Anne Arundel, who battles Niagara County on Friday and Garrett on Sunday, comes into the weekend 5-9 overall and 2-1 in league play after falling 11-1 at Harford on Thursday. Samuel Ryan leads the team with a .417 batting average with 20 hits, 10 runs scored, three doubles, a homer and 10 RBIs. Matthew Semanick is second on the team with a .406 batting average with 13 hits, nine runs scored, three doubles and four RBIs while Mark Scarlas is hitting .333 with 10 hits, three runs scored, a double, a homer and four RBIs. Dustin Gosnell has logged a team-high 19.0 innings pitched with a 2-2 record, 24 strikeouts and a 3.79 ERA.

last time out… Hagerstown Community College rallied for the victory in both ends of a doubleheader to earn a sweep against Prince George's Community College on Thursday. The Hawks won the opener 4-3 and then took the nightcap, 13-7. Brandon Crosby paced the Owls with a 5-for-8 performance with four RBIs and three runs scored in the two games. Crosby knocked in all three runs in the opener for the Largo program, including smacking a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the first inning. Naquan Holden posted four hits, two runs scored and an RBI in the two contests while Kilian Bloat registered two hits and three RBIs, and Ryan Faircloth (Wade, N.C./Cape Fear) added two hits and a run scored in the nightcap.

next on tap… After the stretch of six games in four days is over, Prince George's return home to host Cecil on Thursday and rival Montgomery in a doubleheader on Apr. 1. The Owls are in a stretch of playing 10 of its next 11 games in Largo over the next 10 days that concludes with the twinbill against the Raptors.

weather interruptus… After being able to play the first 13 games of the schedule uninterrupted by weather, four-straight scheduled dates were postponed. The Owls were slated to play Garrett College in a doubleheader on Mar. 12, but cold temperatures forced the twinbill to be rescheduled for April 30 at 12 p.m. The storm that then came through the area moved the March 14 home game against Harford Community College to March 27 at 3:30 p.m. The two-game set against Garrett and the tilt against Harford will both be played in Largo while the game at Cecil on Mar. 16 and two-game set at Alleghany on Mar. 18 were slated to be the first two legs of a four-game road trip before the weather caused those two dates to be postponed. Make up dates to be announced for those two dates.

in the nation… Brandon Crosby leads the National Junior College Athletic Association with 12 stolen bases while ranking fifth with 28 RBIs. Bay To ranks sixth in triples (3) and Harold Marte is ninth in home runs (4). As a team, the Owls rank second in the NJCAA Division III in slugging percentage (.589), second in on-base percentage (.481), third in batting average (.392), fourth in triples (12), seventh in RBIs (141), eighth in runs scored (160), ninth in home runs (12) and ninth in stolen bases (38). NOTE: Prince George's is an NJCAA Division III member so these rankings only include Division III programs in the nation.

in the league… Brandon Crosby leads Maryland JUCO in batting average (.534), hits (31), RBIs (28) and on-base percentage (.597) while ranking third in stolen bases (12) and eighth in runs (21). Jonathan Mahoney ranks third in strikeouts per nine innings (13.05), fifth in strikeouts (29) and ninth in innings pitched (20.0). Harold Marte is third in home runs (4) and Bay To is fourth in triples (3) while Dakota McFadden ranks sixth in doubles (7), ninth in ERA (2.79) and 10th in RBIs (18). Siri-Jacob Ramirez and Quentin Rohrbaugh are tied for seventh in triples (2) while Ramirez also sits eighth in batting average (.442) and Ryan Faircloth is ninth in on-base percentage. As a team, Prince George's leads the league in batting average (.392) and ranks second in triples (12), second in on-base percentage (.481), second in slugging percentage (.589), third in RBIs (141), third in runs (160), fourth in hits (185), fourth in doubles (33), fourth in homers (12) and fourth in stolen bases (38). NOTE: The Maryland JUCO is comprised of all the teams from Maryland no matter what division affiliation (Division I, II or III).

the long ball… Prince George's has smacked 11 home runs this season. Harold Marte leads the team with four homers while Dwayne ColemanRyan Faircloth and Bay To each have two round trippers, and Dakota McFadden has one home run this season.

the roster… Head coach Buddy Foster has added 11 freshman to his team in 2017 while returning 10 players from last year's team.

a loss to the owls family... Legendary Prince George's baseball coach William "Bumps" Vaughan passed away at the age of 90 on Feb. 25. In his long career as a head coach includes 21 years at the helm of the Owls from 1986-2005. The Owls will be wearing a special patch on their uniforms in honor of Vaughan and the athletic department will pay tribute to the legendary coach at an upcoming game.

 Head coach Buddy Foster enters his sixth season as the head coach of the baseball team. Foster has been at Prince George's since the 2009 campaign after serving as the squad's pitching coach for three seasons before being elevated to the head coach position. He
