Prince George's Community College baseball team delivered an impressive sweep of CCBC Catonsville over the weekend, knocking off the Cardinals 7-5 in game one before doubling down with a 10-0 win in just five innings of game two.
In game one, the Owls built an early advantage and held off a late push to secure a 7-5 victory. Catonsville struck first in the top of the second inning, taking advantage of a PGCC error and a two-run double to grab a 2-0 lead. The Owls responded in the bottom half of the inning, as Davyd Gilbert delivered a two-run single and Darrell Pender JR. added an RBI groundout to put the Owls on top, 3-2.
The offense stayed productive in the third inning when Jibril Scott brought home a run on a fielder's choice, followed by another RBI single from Gilbert to extend the lead. The Owls continued to build a cushion and held a five-run advantage by the fifth. Catonsville began to rally late, scoring on a sacrifice fly and an RBI double, but the Owls held firm to seal the win.
Skaggs nearly threw a complete game, lasting 6.1 innings with three strikeouts before being replaced by Akil Barlow Jr. on the bump who picked up the final two outs. Gilbert finished 2-for-2 in game one as he picked up 3 RBI's and scored one run himself. Freshman Garret Duquette came in early due to an injured Owl and delivered on the day, finishing 2-of-3 with a double.
The Owls carried their momentum into game two, earning a 10-0 run-rule victory. The Owls capitalized on an early Catonsville error along with RBI's from Gilbert and Carter Ptak to take a 3-0 lead. Pender Jr. extended the advantage to 4-0 in the second with a groundout.
Things broke open in the third when Prince George's plated six runs. Barlow sparked the scoring with an RBI double, and Anderson Ramirez added a two-run single while another CCBC error allowed three more runs to put the Owls up ten.
Duquette had a strong performance on the mound, tossing five shutout innings while allowing just four hits, striking out three, and walking three. The Owls totaled nine hits, with Ramirez driving in two runs while going 2-for-3. Gilbert remained a key contributor with a perfect 3-for-3 showing in game two.
Prince George's will look to keep the momentum going when they host Harford Community College for a 1 PM doubleheader on Tuesday, April 14th.
