Bergen Community College
The Prince George's Community College baseball team opened the 2026 season on Monday, February 16th, sweeping Bergen Community College in a two-game set played at a neutral site. Originally slated for a true Owls home opener, poor field conditions forced the doubleheader to relocate to Harford Community College in Bel Air, Maryland. The Owls battled to a 2-1 victory in the opener before erupting for a 19-3 win in five innings in game two.
Bergen capitalized early in game one, pushing across a run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Prince George's responded immediately with a run of its own in the bottom half of the frame and added another in the second to move ahead 2-1. From there, both pitching staffs took control, and the remainder of the contest went scoreless. Darrell Pender Jr. sparked the offense with a triple and an RBI, while also stealing two bases. Kolten Hogzett matched him with a pair of stolen bases, applying constant pressure on the basepaths. On the mound, 6'8" freshman Lyric Hartley struck out five over three strong innings in his start. Andrew Gurwah came on in relief to earn the win, and Garrett Duquette closed the door to secure the save.
The Owls carried that momentum into the nightcap, exploding for 15 runs across the first two innings to take command. Bergen managed to break through with a pair of runs in the third and another in the fourth, but the damage had already been done. Prince George's tacked on four additional runs in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 19-3 and finished off the Bulldogs in the fifth to complete the sweep in run-rule fashion. The Owls will now turn their attention to their true home opener as Anne Arundel's Riverhawks visit for a single nine-inning contest scheduled for 2 p.m. on Thursday, February 19.
