Women’s Basketball Looks Ahead to 2025-26 Season
The Prince George's Community College women's basketball team enters the 2025-26 season with high expectations and a championship mindset under the direction of Head Coach Devin May, now in his fifth season at the helm. Since taking over in 2021, May has led the Owls to a 67-28 overall record, including a standout 20-5 campaign last year that ended with a trip to the Region 20 Division II Championship where they finished as runner-up. All five of the Owls losses in 2024-25 came against nationally ranked opponents.
Last season marked Prince George's first year back at the NJCAA Division II level, after competing for several years in Division III, where the program was regularly ranked among the top 10 nationally. The return to Division II came with new challenges, but the Owls quickly re-established themselves as contenders. Now, heading into 2025-26, the program is gaining national attention once again – receiving votes in the NJCAA preseason poll, signaling growing recognition for what Coach May and his team are building.
This year's 27-game schedule includes 13 home and 14 away matchups, with a few repeat opponents to help fill their schedule and prepare for postseason intensity. Rivalries with Howard and Montgomery highlight their opponents in January and February, while nationally respected programs like Bryant & Stratton (VA) and Union will provide early-season tests and key development opportunities.
The Owls return an experienced veteran core, including Aaliyah Membrino, Kristin Smith, Monae Herman, and Sanaa Johnson. In particular, May is excited to return Membrino and Smith who provide a strong physical presence with their size inside, with Herman providing experience in the backcourt. The addition of Kaliyah Gainer, a Palm Bech State transfer, brings scoring skill and versatility, while first-year guard Rebecca Wright joins the program with additional upside at the guard position.
Coach May credits the program's evolution to both player leadership and a growing coaching staff that has become more vocal and deliberate in its approach. The focus this year is on adaptability, basketball IQ, and learning how to win tight games. With a full schedule including back-to-back game days, the Owls are intentionally preparing for the demands of the postseason.
With several players looking to move on to four-year institutions in the spring, the Owls continue to build on their reputation as a launching pad for the next level. A few of the Lady Owls from last year's team such as Tamia Washington (Chestnut Hill), Jai'Den Anderson (Bowie State), and Laila Dodo (Bluefield State) continue the tradition of talent moving on to play at the next level.
As the 2025-26 season begins, Prince George's is focused on more than just returning to the Region 20 title game, this year they're out to finish the job. With preseason recognition and a roster eager to get the season underway, the Owls appear poised to take another step forward.
