The Prince George's Community College women's basketball team secured its first win of the season in their home opener on Wednesday night, defeating The College of Southern Maryland 57-52 in a non-region matchup.
The Owls began the second half trailing 34-28 but came alive with a 14-4 run to grab a 43-38 lead and carried a 46-42 advantage into the final quarter. Prince George's maintained the lead throughout the fourth, responding to each Hawks push with stout defense and responded with a basket of their own when the Hawks did manage to score as they sealed the five-point victory.
The Owls were led in scoring by sophomore Kaliyah Gaynor who just missed out on a double-double with 20 points and 9 rebounds to go along with 4 steals. Returners Aaliyah Membrino (13 points, 13 rebounds) and Kristin Smith (12 points, 14 rebounds) each recorded a double-double in the win. Prince George's went at the basket all night, drawing fouls early and often as they picked up 21 of their 57 points from the free-throw line as they collectively shot 75% as a team.
The win brings the Owls back to .500 (1-1) following a season opening loss at the buzzer on the road against Tidewater Community College on Friday evening. The victory also extends head coach Devin May's streak to five consecutive home-opening wins, and he remains undefeated (4-0) against The College of Southern Maryland since taking over the program in 2021-22.
Prince George's next game action comes on Tuesday, November 18th, when they travel to face Essex County College.
